The Holomatter Backlash
The Integretarian movement and the waking of the Gryphon
The fiftieth century tgc is mainly remembered in most historical records for the resurgence of Hogedepi hegemony elsewhere in the Expanse, and the retaliatory governments that sprung up in its path, particularly that of the Gryphon Republic in Thet. But one odd recurring theme of the Gryphon era—anti-Lyran sentiment—is not sufficiently explained by the Noctian heritage of the Sidêreos dynasty that the Gryphons replaced. The genesis of this attitude can be found in ψηφος, or holomatter dust, and its first appearance is in Thet.

Originally devised in Archiva in 4872, the invention of holomatter was expected to allow for bridging between the physical world and the Link, as a Link inhabitant could obtain a holomatter avatar, and a real person or object could likewise be converted into holomatter at the molecular level, leaving behind a physical body and entering the Link at will. This second process—of seamless dematerialisation—greatly alarmed all but the most accelerationist of radical materialists when it was unveiled, who could not accept the prospect of "meat suicide" that was entailed.

This schism, which cut transversely through nearly every demographic, is generally regarded as the inciting incidence of the Integretarian Awakening of the 4900s. The Integretarians eventually took up other reactionary causes, such as opposing Hogedepi aggression and rejecting ethnic groups that were predominantly pro-Transcendentalist, in particular the Lyrans. Only the Consolidation—and the reality that many children born to permanently-plugged-in parents had no physical bodies—eventually pushed the matter of ideological consistence to the breaking point.

Causal chain of events

1. Invention of Holomatter results in public outcry against dematerialization
2. Reactionary "pro-Integrity" movement forms
3. Hogedepi aggression in the central Expanse prompts the formation of the Gryphon self-defence advocacy movement in the outer archipelago
4. Integretarian movement absorbs other reactionary threads in public discourse, ultimately merges into Gryphon movement under Ivilon Desqrit
5. Lyran appeasement and pacifist advocacy provokes Gryphon movement to pledge to expel Lyrans
6. Gryphons steadily gain popularity as Hogedep threat ramps up
7. LIYAL lodges a formal protest with Emperor Sidêreon, condemns anti-Lyran attitudes
8. Gryphon movement organises into open war, captures palaces at Regenelía, forcing Sidêreos family into exile
9. Gryphon Republic expels both LIYAL and LCC loyalists from Thet; only a few Lilitai and Lyrans remain behind due to rampant ethnic profiling and hate-motivated crimes
10. In the face of continued strategic defeats against the Hogedep, LIYAL forces withdraw from the central Expanse, falling back to Illera and Wanisin
11. Unopposed Hogedep spread throughout Expanse, as far as Altíkíkë (adjacent to Pesenese and Thessian branes of Hromo and Tletkars)
12. Gryphons forcibly relocate scattered inhabitants of Thet into large inner cities to facilitate defence, eventually resulting in the Consolidation
13. Lyran collaborators with the Gryphon republic develop the Atshanúénai Project
14. Gryphon–Hogedepi War
15. Ivilon Desqrit refuses to give up power; decades of suffering and virtual children follow
16. The Stía Resistance forms inside the Link to oppose Desqrit and her successors
17. The Stía Resistance is assisted by LIYAL and the LCC and eventually overthrows the Gryphon government, founding the Quill Republic
18. Quill Republic legalises holomatter so that Linkdwellers can be reunited with their physical families
