undertow.

vendika, n. Undertow; a twist of fate which is predictable but concealed. Metaphorically, the opposite of shúthíka; the outcome can be predicted from the behaviour, but the information to do so is not obvious. Like shúthíka, this is usually used to describe a danger (in this case, hidden danger) with long-term consequences (such as treading on thin ice), but may also be used to capture actions of serendipity.

etymology: Contracted from venibedika; some texts spell it as ven'dika in recognition of this.
