Political History Polities at the time of the Terran Exodus
At the time of Terra's abandonment in 5000 CE, just seven independent political bodies were represented at the Corpus Generālis de Nātiōnēs Ūnītae in Genava. These were themselves unions and leagues of individual countries, consolidated from older nation-states and remnants thereof over the course of the past three thousand years.

Polities

Northern Union

The oldest bloc, it was comprised of NATO signatories from Yukon to Finland, notably lacking the United States of America. Bermuda and the Falklands were also part of the Northern Union. Cyprus, Malta, Türkiye, and Sicily were lost to the League of the Faithful. Ellesmere Island and Northern Greenland remain disputed territories with the Golden States.

Golden States

Comprised of Belarus, Russia, Crimea, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Tajikstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Hungary, Israel, the Philippines, and the United States of America, including Alaska and Hawaii but none of its other overseas possessions. The Altai Republic was transferred to China. Ellesmere Island and Northern Greenland remain disputed territories with the Northern Union.

League of the Faithful

Comprised of most MENA countries—Pakistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Qatar, the Emirates, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Lebanon, Tunisia, Algeria, and Greater Morocco, plus the Muslim-majority countries of Bangladesh, Türkiye, and Indonesia, as well as the reacquired Malta, Cyprus, and Sicily. Iran and Afghanistan are absent.

Brasil Unido

Comprised of all of Central and South America and all Caribbean nations, with the notable exceptions of the Falklands and Bermuda.

Pacific Trade Treaty Organization

Comprised of Japan, Korea, Guam, French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Norfolk Island, New Caledonia, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Rapa Nui (Easter Island), the Solomon Islands, United Papua, Thailand, and Malaysia (including Singapore). Many of the smaller island nations were long ago rendered uninhabitable by sea level rise and had become landless nations whose only sovereign territory were their embassies in Tokyo, Seol, Singapore, and Auckland.

Greater China

Comprised of China, Tibet, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, New Taipei, Nepal, Mongolia, Brunei, the Altai Republic, and Afghanistan, and the South China Sea Protectorates.

Association of the South

Consists of all parts of Africa not claimed by the League of the Faithful, plus Sri Lanka, India, the islands of the Indian Ocean, and Australia.

Note on Antarctica

Prior to the polar melt of the early 2100s, treaties between the powers of the time prevented the large-scale exploitation and colonisation of Antarctica. These were quickly discarded after the dying ice sheets exposed incredible mineral wealth, which could be extracted with minimal environmental risk. By the start of the 23rd century, Antarctica was the most toxic place on Earth due to heavy industry and a lack of willpower by the wealthy countries to punish violators. It continued to attract Libertarians into the 25th century, by which point the continent's deplorable condition—and total lack of remaining natural resources—began driving these 'sea-steaders' elsewhere, such as the still-new, privately-held colonies on Mars.

Toward the end of the third millennium, efforts to restore Earth's climate to tolerable levels paid off, and the last inhabitants of Antarctica were forced to abandon their coastal settlements due to regular Winter freezes. At the time of the exodus from Earth, the Golden States, Association of the South, and Northern Union all staked claims to partitions of Antarctica based on the ancient treaties of the twentieth century, though there were no more research stations, or even reasons to maintain them.
