The Lilitai were the first tribe of humans in the Ksreskézaian–Hogedepi Expanse, and are perhaps the most extensively studied population of cultural isolates in the species since its collective departure from its homeworld, Earth, almost seventy-eight thousand Lyran years ago. They are significant in their contribution to the history of the modern Expanse, including Thet, and are additionally a singular case study in testing the resilience of societal and moral norms in the face of near-complete destruction of a culture.

For just over two and a half centuries, the Lilitai journeyed throughout the former Ksreskézaian Empire, witnessing the collapse of the vast nation as it returned to a natural state consisting of hundreds of independent polities, under the looming expansionist threat of the newly-unhindered Hogedep. While most travellers sought to return to their homes, the Lilitai had lost the only home they had ever known, and this unique position both allowed and required them to develop diplomacy, which had become a lost art under the three warring command economies that dominated the Expanse during the Grand War.
